Farley’s East (Oakland, CA)

image

One of my favorite places to write. I thank my thesis director (from my MFA program) for telling me about the place. Apparently, they have locations in San Francisco and Emeryville, but I still have yet to check those out.

- Excellent food (breakfast and lunch). Love the egg dishes and salads.

- Good coffee.

- Yummy desserts.

- You can buy a card and use it to purchase coffee, food, or better yet, give to a friend as a gift card.

- Sneaky tip: Bakesale Bette’s other sandwich location is only a few doors down. I’ve been known to sneak in a fried chicken sandwich here as I sip my coffee. (But always remember to tip big due to intense guilt.)

- Nice–I mean NICE–bathroom, complete with air freshener and a long chalkboard with daily questions posted for patrons to answer while they sit on the toilet.

- Free wi-fi

Cons: Gets crowded at times, but I always manage to find a seat.

5 out of 5 typewriters.

tumblrbot asked: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INANIMATE OBJECT?

My laptop with Scrivener installed on it.

Love this writing software so damn much. I’d marry it if it were legal. Check it out at http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.php

Sack’s Coffee House (Berkeley, CA)

image

This is a good cafe to write at.

- Spacious room with windows.

- Clean bathroom. (Toilet seat covers and air freshener– Hell yes!)

- Free wi-fi (this can be good for research, but bad for those of you with terrible self-control–like myself–when it comes to Facebook, etc.)

- Good coffee

- Decent desserts.

- Another plus: they serve breakfast and lunch!

- Con: Can get crowded (but you can pretend you’re in Paris. ;-)

I give it 4 out of 5 typewriters.
